Nickelodeon’s The Fresh Beat Band head to South Florida!

One of the hottest pop acts on the road this year is a group you've probably never heard of, unless you have a child of preschool age.

That would be The Fresh Beat Band, stars of the TV series of the same name, now in its third season on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. The Fresh Beats, as they are known to the faithful, launch their first national tour. By popular demand, there will be 95 shows, nearly twice as many as were scheduled when the trek was announced in November 2011. Tickets sold out within a day in Miami, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia and New York City.

Created and executive-produced by the husband-and-wife team of Scott Kraft and Nadine van der Velde, The Fresh Beat Band follows four young adults — two guys named Twist and Shout and two gals, Kiki and Marina — as they study music and solve everyday problems.

The actors all sing, dance and play instruments, and original tunes written by Kraft and van der Velde and other pop composers are incorporated into each episode. Bouncy, wholesome numbers include “Here We Go”, “A Friend Like You” and “Just Like a Rockstar”, which all reached No. 1 on iTunes' children's songs chart. They can all be found on the compilation The Fresh Beat Band: Music from the Hit TV Show.

Kraft and van der Velde's younger daughter, Beatrice, now 10, inspired the format. "Years ago, when she started going to birthday parties, we noticed — as we had with our older daughter — that they were themed after older kids' shows," says van der Velde. "Nothing awful, but not entirely appropriate — boyfriend/girlfriend stuff, for these kids who were 2 and 3 and 4. So we thought, why not create real characters these kids could interact with?"

They still wanted older role models: "kids these days are very sophisticated, and we wanted a show with a real band who didn't talk down to them," Kraft says. Adds Paula Kaplan, Nickelodeon's executive vice president of talent, "We wanted a visibly diverse cast, with different skills."

The performers certainly boast eclectic and impressive résumés. Thomas Hobson, 27, who plays Shout, performed at Yale Drama School as a university undergraduate; Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, 25, cast as Kiki, also is a theater veteran, and a trained opera singer who began violin studies at age 3.

Newest cast member Tara Perry, 26 — who replaced Shayna Rose as Marina in 2011, after Rose left the show to pursue other career opportunities — has an extensive background in improvisational comedy. Perry recalls that her audition notice called for "a redhead who could sing, dance and play drums. And they wanted someone who was a mix between Lucille Ball and Tina Fey."

The roles were originally tailored, though, to the company. When Jon Beavers, 27, the stage actor and DJ who plays Twist, auditioned, "he rapped instead of singing," Kraft remembers. "And we thought, 'That's great — let's throw him in.' "

Hobson notes that the producers still, "at the top of every season, ask us to draw up a list of any talents we have that we haven't yet used on the show."

Kraft posits that "part of the reason the tour is so popular is that these performers are doing what they do best. And people can tell that they'll be able to do it live."

The Fresh Beat Band will be at The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, Florida on Tuesday April 24, 2012 and Friday August 24, 2012 at Mizner Park Amphitheatre in Boca Raton, Florida.

Elvis Costello and the Imposters finally bring their THE REVOLVER TOUR to South Florida!

This unique and colorful carnival-style stage show invites select fans to join Costello on-stage to spin the Songbook Wheel featuring a collection of 40 banners including hits, rarities and a few surprises. This interactive and entertaining experience ensures a new set at each performance.

With influences ranging from country, pop, rock, reggae and everything in between, Costello's eclecticism, meaningful lyrics and richly diverse music have led him to be recognized as one of the most innovative and significant songwriters in music history.

The son of British bandleader Ross McManus, Costello (born Declan McManus) worked as a computer programmer in the early '70s. During a stint with the country-rock group Flip City, his music caught the attention of the fledgling independent record label, Stiff. Costello's debut singles including the song, "Alison," failed to chart initially, however, the album, “My Aim is True”, produced by Nick Lowe, climbed to #14 on the British charts. The reggae-inflected "Watching the Detectives," became his first hit climbing to #15 by the end of the year.

“This Year's Model”, Costello's first album recorded with the Attractions, was released in 1978 and reached #4 in Britain and #30 in America. “Armed Forces” (1979) was another hit, reaching number #2 in the U.K. and cracking the Top Ten in the U.S. "Oliver's Army," the first single from the album, also peaked at #2 in Britain, though none of the singles from “Armed Forces” charted in America. The soul-influenced “Get Happy!!” peaked at #2 in Britain and #11 in America. Later that year, two collections of B-sides, singles, and outtakes called “Taking Liberties” was released in America; in Britain, a similar album called “Ten Bloody Marys & Ten How's Your Fathers” appeared as a cassette-only release, complete with different tracks than the American version.

Costello and the Attractions released “Trust” in early 1981; the fifth album in a row produced by Nick Lowe. It debuted at #9 on the British charts and worked its way into the Top 30 in the U.S. During the spring of 1981, Costello and the Attractions began recording an album of country covers called “Almost Blue” that produced the British Top 10 single "A Good Year for the Roses." While “Imperial Bedroom” (1982) garnered Costello some of his best reviews despite failing to yield a Top 40 hit, his “Punch the Clock” (1983) proved more commercially successful and produced the popular single "Everyday I Write the Book." After the disappointingly reviewed “Goodbye Cruel World” (1984), Costello took time off to produce The Pogues before releasing 1986's “King of America”, a country-folk album followed by the edgy “Blood and Chocolate”.

In 1989, Costello released “Spike”, songwriting collaboration with Paul McCartney that included the single "Veronica." "Veronica" became his biggest American hit, peaking at #19. Two years later came “Mighty Like a Rose”, the classical “The Juliet Letters” with the Brodsky Quartet (1993), “Brutal Youth” (1994), “Kojak Variety” (1995), “All This Useless Beauty” (1996) and “Painted from Memory” (1998) with Burt Bacharach. The latter union resulted in a movie appearance and song set for AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME.

After a 2001 UCLA residency where he performed and was instrumental in teaching music, Costello returned to the commercial music industry and turned out additional albums with his new band that featured original Attractions members Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve. Billed as the Imposters, the band was featured on “When I Was Cruel and Cruel Smile” (2002).

Since then, Costello has collaborated with his wife, Diana Krall, produced additional classical music works, fronted the 52-piece jazz orchestra the Metropole Orkest interpreting his own classics and more.

He has made cameos on both the small screen and large including turns in A COLBERT CHRISTMAS: The Greatest Gift of All, NBC TV’s 30 ROCK, Spinal Tap's UNWIGGED AND UNPLUGGED and the HBO original series, TREME. Costello sits on the Advisory Committee of the Board of Directors of the Jazz Foundation of America and has been instrumental in saving the homes and the lives of America's elderly jazz and blues musicians, including musicians who survived Hurricane Katrina.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. His latest release is 2010's “National Ransom”.

Elvis Costello and the Imposters will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on Wednesday April 25, 2012.

Melissa Etheridge brings her FEARLESS LOVE World Tour to South Florida!

Outspoken Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician and social activist Melissa Etheridge first picked up the guitar in her native Kansas at the age of eight and began penning her own songs shortly thereafter. She attended the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, before dropping out after a year in the early ‘80s to make her way in Los Angeles. After a stint on the club circuit, producers took notice and Etheridge scored a deal releasing her self-titled debut in 1988.

The album quickly drew comparisons to such heavyweights as Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp, as it spawned the hit single “Bring Me Some Water” and earned gold certification. In the wake of the album’s success, Etheridge performed at the Grammy Awards the following year and contributed vocals to Don Henley‘s “The End of the Innocence”.

Etheridge managed to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump with 1989′s “Brave and Crazy”, which followed the same musical formula as its predecessor and proved to be another gold-certified success. It would be nearly three years before Etheridge’s next studio album appeared, however, and 1992 signaled the arrival of “Never Enough”, an album that proved to be more musically varied.

But it was Etheridge’s fourth release that would prove to be her massive commercial breakthrough. Tired of rumors and questions regarding her sexuality, Etheridge decided to put the speculation to rest once and for all, titling the album “Yes I Am”. The album, which spawned two major MTV/radio hits with “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window” would sell a staggering six million copies in the U.S. during a single-year period and earned a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocalist. Subsequent releases followed including 1995′s “Your Little Secret”, 1999′s “Breakdown” and 2001′s “Skin”.

The year 2002 saw the release of Etheridge’s autobiography, “The Truth Is: My Life in Love and Music”, and 2004′s “Lucky” was her celebration of a new romance. Later that same year, Etheridge revealed that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. But early detection allowed for recovery, and she gave strength to many of those stricken by the disease with a powerful performance of Janis Joplin‘s “Piece of My Heart” at the 47th Annual Grammys, held in February 2005. That September, Etheridge released “Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled”, a compilation of career highlights and new material.

In 2007 Etheridge released “The Awakening” chronicling her rise to rock star, human rights activist, parent and cancer survivor. That’s same year she was honored with a 2007 Academy Award for “I Need to Wake Up,” her song featured in the Al Gore environmental documentary AN INCONVINIENT TRUTH.

Other releases include “A New Thought for Christmas” (2008), “Fearless Love” (2010) and the recently released “Icon” (2011).

In addition to her Academy Award and Grammys, Etheridge is a recipient of the Juno Awards’ International Entertainer of the Year (1990) and GLAAD‘s Stephen F. Kolzak Award (2006), honoring openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equal rights.

Melissa Etheridge will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on Wednesday May 16, 2012.

The Gipsy Kings bring their 2012 Tour to South Florida!

The gypsy flamenco band the Gipsy Kings are touring North America and the band’s added a unique song to its repertoire.

The group is from the South of France… and they’re of Spanish Romani heritage. Their style of music is rumba flamenco, often mixed in with popular beats. They’ve had a busy career and they are loved in the United States where they tour about twice a year. The band first burst onto the world stage in the late 1980s with hits like “Bamboleo”.

They haven’t released a new studio album in over three years so it’s a little puzzling that their most recent work is heard in an animation movie: Disney- Pixar’s’ TOY STORY 3. Since Buzz Lightyear is switched to Spanish in this film the theme song is too. "You’ve Got a Friend in Me” becomes “Hay un Amigo en Mi,” a full-blown rumba-flamenco tune, courtesy of the Gipsy Kings.

Tom MacDougall, TOY STORY 3’s music supervisor says, for the scene in which Buzz Lightyear starts to dance, they needed a band with an iconic sound that would identify flamenco, and Spain, immediately in American moviegoers’ minds. And no band could do that better than the Gipsy Kings.

Tom MacDougall: “For that moment we needed people to know immediately what’s happening you hear those first chords on the guitar and even when I see the film now with audiences they get right away so for that minute or so of the footage the song identifies what’s going to happen and you just enjoy the ride.”

Gipsy Kings’ band member Andre Reyes says they were immensely pleased to get the song request from Disney Pixar. He says they worked to make it their own -- “we gave it a Gipsy Kings makeover, with the style of singing of Nicolas, the lead singer, and the traditional Flamenco rhythm.” He adds that the song may give the band a special connection to American audiences during this tour. And if they get requests, Reyes says they’ll definitely play their version of the TOY STORY 3 theme song.

The Gipsy Kings will be at The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, Florida on Friday April 20, 2012 and at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida on Wednesday May 9, 2012.

ODYSSEO is being performed at the same site as in 2010: Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami… but this time under a White Big Top more than twice the size.

Surrounded by awe-inspiring projections and visual effects, some 70 horses and 55 artists embark together on a journey, travelling through amazing natural landscapes. “The horse has been a partner of humanity throughout the ages,” explained Normand Latourelle, President and Artistic Director of Cavalia. “It’s thanks to horses that humans imagined they could travel to the ends of the earth. This powerful and natural wonder of an animal enabled mankind to bridge cultures, to create alliances amongst people, and thus to freely roam the planet. He has been one of the most important instruments in the evolution of humanity. This is the essence of ODYSSEO.”

Latourelle continued, “We had such great success in Miami last time around that we knew it would be one of our first tour stops once we finished creating our all-new show.” Miami is the only Florida stop slated for ODYSSEO’s US tour.

ODYSSEO is presented under the world’s largest touring big top. Covering an area of more than 100,000 square feet – two and a quarter times larger than the original Cavalia show’s tent – the new big top houses a 27,000-square-foot stage. “We’ve created an even bigger big top to put as few limits as possible on our horses and artists, allowing them to play, run, dance, jump and twirl around to their hearts’ content,” said Latourelle. Inside, an immense theater seats 2,290 people with no obstructed views. By redefining the scale and possibilities of a touring space, ODYSSEO can accommodate even more in the way of equestrian arts, acrobatics, music, multimedia wizardry and special effects, the signature ingredients of a Cavalia show.

Cavalia’s ODYSSEO is now at the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami, Florida thru Sunday April 15, 2012.

Van Halen brings their A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH Tour and David Lee Roth to South Florida!

After two years of rumors, Van Halen finally hit the road. The five-month tour comes on the heels of their twelfth studio album release, “A Different Kind of Truth,” which hit stores in early February 2012. “A Different Kind of Truth” is Van Halen’s first new album since the release of “Van Halen III” back in 1998.

“What’s so exciting about the upcoming Van Halen tour, other than having David Lee Roth back on board, is the fact that they’ll be playing brand new material.” “This is the first time Van Halen will release material with David Lee Roth fronting since 1984!”

The current Van Halen lineup includes: front man David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his son (with actress Valerie Bertinelli): bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. The Van Halen 2007-2008 Tour featured the same lineup shortly after the controversial departure of bassist Michael Anthony who currently plays bass in the band Chickenfoot.

The Van Halen 2012 tour kicked-off on February 18, 2012 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, KY. The tour will travel over the next few months across the US and Canada before reaching its last reported venue at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, LA on June 26, 2012. Kool & The Gang will join the band as openers for select dates.

Van Halen will be at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale, Florida tonight: Tuesday April 10, 2012.

The legendary Liza Minnelli heads to South Florida!

Stage and screen legend and songstress Liza Minnelli, winner of four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special “Legends” Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy, is one of the entertainment world’s consummate performers. In film, on stage and in television, Minnelli has won critical acclaim, a multitude of fans, and recognition from her peers in show business, giving new dimension and credibility to the word “superstar.”

Minnelli, the daughter of award-winning performer Judy Garland and acclaimed film director Vincente Minnelli, won her first professional recognition – The Theatre World Award – at age 16 in 1963 for an Off-Broadway revival of the musical BEST FOOT FORWARD. At 19, in 1965, she became the youngest woman ever to win a leading actress Tony Award for the musical FLORA THE RED MENACE.

Over the years, Minnelli’s other Broadway appearances have been memorable. In 1975 her enormous strength and talent were put to the test when she agreed to replace an ailing Gwen Verdon in the original Broadway run of Bob Fosse’s CHICAGO. With only one-week’s rehearsal, and no public announcement, Liza played to sold-out audiences for a period of five weeks. In 1984, Liza reunited with her CHICAGO co-star Chita Rivera in the Kander and Ebb musical THE RINK. It garnered Liza a Best Actress Tony nomination. In 1997, Liza took over for one month only for an ailing Julie Andrews in Broadway’s VICTOR/VICTORIA.

A special Tony was awarded to Minnelli for breaking the box-office record at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1973 for her one-woman show. In 1977, she returned to the Broadway stage in a starring role in the Kander and Ebb musical THE ACT, for which she was awarded her third Tony. The musical was directed by Martin Scorsese, who had just directed her on the big screen in NEW YORK, NEW YORK opposite Robert DeNiro.

Her first starring film role, however, was as the love-interest in Albert Finney’s only film as director and star, CHARLIE BUBBLES (1967). In 1969, she appeared in THE STERILE CUCKOO and subsequently earned her first Academy Award nomination for the role. The following year, she appeared in Otto Preminger’s TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME, JUNIE MOON.

In 1972 her movie career peaked when she played Sally Bowles in Bob Fosse’s now iconic film adaptation of the musical CABARET. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Actress for Minnelli. The role also earned her a Golden Globe and a British Film Academy Award. The unqualified success of CABARET put Minnelli on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week. In 1981, she co-starred with Dudley Moore on the big screen in the classic ARTHUR, going on to make the sequel ARTHUR 2 in 1988.

Minnelli starred in the first concert ever filmed live for television in 1972. The seminal LIZA WITH A Z (directed and choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse) produced a Top 20 album and won the Emmy for Outstanding Single Program and the prestigious Peabody Award. It has been released in recent years on DVD and aired on Showtime.

Minnelli emerged as a dramatic television actress in the made-for-TV drama A TIME TO LIVE as the mother of a child with muscular dystrophy. The role won her second Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and universal acclaim from television critics and writers around the world.

In between her many TV and film roles, Minnelli never stopped touring and has long been considered one of the most exciting concert performers, electrifying audiences around the world and setting records at the most prestigious venues.

In 2000, Minnelli was hospitalized for encephalitis. The prognosis was grim: she was told she would never walk, talk, dance or sing again. But Liza’s incredible will, determination and relentless hard work proved the doctors wrong, and by June 2002, she was back on stage at the Beacon Theater in New York. Her triumphant comeback CD entitled “Liza’s Back!” was released in October 2002, and she was seen the following year as Lucille Austero on FOX TV’s critically acclaimed ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.

Minnelli made a triumphant return to Broadway in 2008 with LIZA’S AT THE PALACE … which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event. She recreated the show at the MGM Grand where her performance was filmed for a public television special and a DVD. The show’s cast recording was nominated for a Grammy Award.

In 2010, following a much talked about cameo in SEX AND THE CITY 2, Minnelli released “Confessions” which was recorded with her longtime collaborator, pianist Billy Stritch.

Throughout her lifetime, Minnelli has supported various charities and causes. She served on the board of directors of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential for 20 years. She also has dedicated much time and performance proceeds to amFAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research.

Today, she works with students at The Actor’s Studio teaching master classes in acting and singing. Her well-known generosity of spirit, enthusiasm and commitment to her craft are unequaled in the entertainment industry, where she continues her extraordinary career with ongoing concert tours around the world.

Liza Minnelli will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on Tuesday April 10, 2012.

Roger Waters brings THE WALL Live Tour back to South Florida in 2012!

Roger Waters has not kept it a secret that his visually stunning production of THE WALL would continue on into 2012. Now it’s known that it’s not just a few shows, but at least 36.

The 2012 version of the production begins in Houston at the Toyota Center May 1, 2012.

Waters has tweaked the show as it has gone along, adding or changing elements that have kept it relevant. But now it’s apparently been adjusted to make it an outdoor show – which should suit concertgoers having withdrawals now that U2’s extravagant production has been mothballed.

The latest trek includes stadium stops at San Francisco’s AT&T Park May 11, Vancouver’s BC Place May 26, Chicago’s Wrigley Field June 8, Toronto’s Rogers Centre June 23 and the last listed show at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park July 14.

There are also a few TBDs – in Los Angeles, Boston and New York – which could also mean stadiums if the right deals are worked out.

Those of you who’ve seen this show know what to do – bring a friend. It’s one of those concerts you’ve probably told all your more stationary buddies about.

“When Roger Waters finished building THE WALL in its entirety, at Madison Square Garden, it was just another brick on what was the best arena concert I’ve ever been to. Period,” wrote the New York Post’s Dan Aquilante.

For those who pay attention to the music, the tour includes guitarists Snowy White, Dave Kilminster, G.E. Smith, Harry Waters on Hammond Organ and Graham Broad on Drums.

Roger Waters’ THE WALL Live Tour will be at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Friday June 15, 2012.

Disney's MARY POPPINS flies back into South Florida in 2013!

Producers Cameron Mackintosh and Thomas Schumacher are pleased to announce the South Florida return engagement of Disney's MARY POPPINS.

The entire original creative team reunited to bring this magical story of the world's most famous nanny to audiences around North America. Since the tour's launch in Chicago in March 2009, MARY POPPINS has earned continuous critical praise and box-office success.

MARY POPPINS, a co-production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, opened on Broadway on November 16, 2006 at the legendary New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City.

Based on P.L. Travers' cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, MARY POPPINS the stage play features the Academy Award®-winning music and lyrics of Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. The stage production has been created, in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh, by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, who has written the book, and the Olivier Award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who have composed new songs and additional music and lyrics.

Consistently among the top-grossing shows on Broadway, MARY POPPINS continues in its 5th smash year at the New Amsterdam Theatre and has already surpassed its 1000th performance – a milestone reached by only a rare few number of shows in Broadway history. The Broadway production has grossed over $200 million to date and been seen by over 2.1 million theatergoers.

Simultaneously, the show's popularity grows around the globe. Following a successful three year run (December 2004 - January 2008) at the Prince Edward Theatre on London's West End, a UK tour of MARY POPPINS commenced in summer 2008 and concluded its acclaimed run in Cardiff in April 2009. MARY POPPINS premiered two new major international productions in 2010: the Australian production at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne and an open-ended run at the Circus Theatre in Scheveningen, Holland, outside of Amsterdam.

The US Tour of Disney's MARY POPPINS will be playing at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Arsht Center in downtown Miami, Florida from January 1 thru 6, 2013.
