Legendary multi-Grammy Award winner Gladys Knight heads to South Florida!

Very few singers over the last 50 years have matched the unassailable artistry of Gladys Knight. The seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary and has triumphed in film, television and live performance.
This past year, she continued her winning streak in even more versatile ways. Knight raised the stakes when she put on her dancing shoes and joined the cast of ABC’s hit reality competition, DANCING WITH THE STARS. She also enjoyed recent success playing the mother of the President on the syndicated comedy sitcom THE FIRST FAMILY.
This fall, Knight will lend her musical expertise to Centric’s new original series APOLLO LIVE. Joining judges Doug E. Fresh and Michael Bivins, the legendary songstress will give guidance to contestants as they take the stage with the hope to jumpstart their career in the entertainment industry.
Georgia-born Knight began performing gospel music at age four. Three years later, she won the grand prize on Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour, and the following year, she, along with her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest, formed The Pips.  In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George.  The group was renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic line-up was in place.
The group debuted their first album in 1960 when Knight was just 16.  They went on to achieve iconic status, having recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.  Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s, with Top 10 gold-certified singles like “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye),”  “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,”  “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world.  Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends Are For.”  Recently, Knight reunited with her collaborators for the first time in 25 years for the anniversary of their historic “That’s What Friends Are For” performance benefiting AIDS research.
All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade:  “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); “Many Different Roads” (1999) and “At Last” (2001).
Her screen and stage credits include the Cable Ace Award-winning HBO’s SISTERS IN THE NAME OF LOVE (1986), BENSON, THE JEFFERSONS, NEW YORK UNDERCOVER, JAG and LAS VEGAS.  She’s also appeared as a guest judge on FOX’s smash hit AMERICAN IDOL.  In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ. Knight also enjoyed a critically-acclaimed four-year run at the Flamingo Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, which was hailed “the number-one show on the Strip” by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in the early 2000s. She recently returned to the Strip last year to the Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African-American performer to have a venue named after her in Las Vegas.
In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Knight published an autobiography, “Between Each Line of Pain and Glory” in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
Adding to her already impressive collection, Knight won another Grammy for her duet with the late Ray Charles on his posthumous album “Genius Loves Company” (2005). The duo won for Best Gospel Performance for their duet “Heaven Help Us All.”
Last year saw Knight both honoring and being honored, first at a Michael Jackson tribute concert, and then at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. At the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, Knight joined such performers as Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and Smokey Robinson in a tribute to the legendary King of Pop in a concert event called “Michael Forever.” Following that, Knight was honored with a “Legend Award” alongside fellow recipients Earth, Wind & Fire on the BET broadcast of the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.
A humanitarian and philanthropist, Knight has devoted to various worthy causes, including the American Diabetes Association – for which she is a national spokesperson, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention. She has been honored by numerous organizations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award. An iconic supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of America, she just recently donated iTunes purchase proceeds from a Randy Jackson-produced song, “The Dream,” to motivate youths and support the non-profit.
Knight fans are still enjoying her last album, “Before Me”, which paid homage to the great legends of song – Ella, Duke, Billie, Lena – as well as the many artists who served as Knight’s friends, mentors, colleagues and inspiration throughout her career.
She is currently working on a new album with Jackson with whom she previously collaborated with on her Grammy-winning album “At Last”.
Gladys Knight will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida on Friday & Saturday December 28 & 29, 2012.

Rock legends The Who bring their QUADROPHENIA North American Tour to South Florida!

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey announce the return of the band’s classic album “Quadrophenia” to the concert stage beginning in November 2012.
This will not be the first time The Who has toured performing its 1973 double-album about alienation, mods and rockers. The band took “Quadrophenia” on the road in North America and Europe in 1996 and 1997.

To recreate “Quadophenia” live, Townshend and Daltrey will have a little help from their friends: Zak Starkey on drums, bassist Pino Palladino, Simon Townshend on guitar/backing vocals, keyboardist Christ Stainton, Loren Gold on keyboards and backing vocals and Frank Simes serving as musical director as well as keyboardist and backing vocalist.

As a warm-up for the tour, a special one-night-only theater showing of the rock-doc “The Who: Quadrophenia – Can You See The Real Me?” is scheduled July 24 at 8 pm local time (July 25 in Canada). Presented by NCM Fathom Events, AEG Live and UMe, the film includes a special welcome message from Townshend.

The film also promises plenty of historic footage, including the opening night of the band’s 1973 QUADROPHENIA Tour in San Francisco when Keith Moon collapsed and resulted in Townshend asking the audience if anyone could play drums. Scot Halpin answered Townshend’s call, thus ensuring his place in rock ’n’ roll trivia.

The Who’s QUADROPHENIA Tour will be at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday November 1, 2012.

Australian pop vocal sensation Human Nature brings their Motown revue to South Florida!

Twenty-two years ago, the music of Motown traveled around the globe to Sydney, Australia, where four high school students – brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney, Phil Burton and Toby Allen – became instantly enamored. In sharp contrast to their country’s common obsession with “guitars, grunt and good old rock and roll,” these young gentleman embraced soul, gospel and harmony groups. Forming a singing group in tribute to their love of a cappella doo-wop, Human Nature was born.
Today, Human Nature is Australia’s leading pop vocal group, having released nine albums,  five of which went to #1 in their native continent, selling millions of records world-wide and garnering 23 platinum awards, 70 Top 40 hits and five Top 10 hits. The group has opened for Celine Dion and Michael Jackson in Europe and Australia.
Their chart-topping Motown tribute, REACH OUT, went five-times-platinum, attracting the attention of famed songwriter Smokey Robinson who presented them in an exclusive booking at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace, where they played five and six nights a week to sold-out crowds for two-and-a-half years.
Human Nature is now ready to tackle the rest of America. Their first stateside release is “The Motown Record”, featuring 11 soul classics plus a bonus track, including “Get Ready,” the band’s collaboration with Smokey Robinson, distinctive doo-wop versions of “Ooh Baby Baby” and “Just My Imagination,” as well as the Four Tops’ “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Baby I Need Your Loving,” the Temptations’ “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight,” Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” and the Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love.” The versions are faithful, yet updated and freshened, everything we’ve loved about them renewed and revitalized, performed and arranged by four guys who clearly love to sing and harmonize on these particular songs.
“Human Nature Sings Motown”, a telecast of the group’s Las Vegas show filmed by longtime Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich, was at the center of PBS’ fund-raising efforts last December, featuring an appearance by Smokey Robinson. A DVD version of the show includes 40 minutes of bonus content featuring the band discussing Motown’s enduring influence with the label’s legendary songwriters Lamont Dozier, Eddie and Brian Holland, all of whom have given their blessings to Human Nature, as well as more than 20 minutes of performances not shown in the original broadcast.
Human Nature’s many accomplishments include performing at the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and performing on Oprah when the show was taped before thousands in Australia, but nothing beats making it in America, the home of not only Motown, but much of the music they are most passionate about.
Human Nature will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida from November 27 to December 1, 2012.

80s rock Broadway musical ROCK OF AGES returns to South Florida!

In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker in LA's most famous rock club and they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80's.
ROCK OF AGES, the 5 time Tony nominated musical, is an arena-rock love story told through the mind blowing, face-melting hits of JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA, WHITESNAKE and many more.

It was also made into a major motion picture, directed by HAIRSPRAY: The Musical's Adam Shankman and features a star-studded cast that includes: Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston, Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman, Will Forte and Diego Boneta.  The film is now avaiable on DVD and Blu-ray disc.

An interesting footnote is that the film was shot entirely in South Florida where an entire section of downtown Miami was transformed into a 1987 Sunset Strip, including a Shell gas station (complete with those old stand-up gas pumps) and even a Tower Records and Frederick's of Hollywood storefront.  Heck, even an 80's Angelyne billboard was erected, which was a sight to see as it contrasted the present-day downtown Miami skyline (which, of course, was digitally removed for the actual film).  Also, a stadium sequence was filmed at the home of the Miami Dolphins: Sun Life Stadium and all of the interior shots of the fictional club The Bourbon Room was filmed at The Revolution club in Fort Lauderdale.

With smash hit productions in Australia, London, South Korea and still rockin' on Broadway, ROCK OF AGES is a worldwide phenomenon featuring 28 classic rock tunes including DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’, WE BUILT THIS CITY, THE FINAL COUNTDOWN, WANTED DEAD OF ALIVE, HERE I GO AGAIN, HARDEN MY HEART, CAN’T FIGHT THIS FEELING, RENEGADE and
I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.
Don't miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on!
ROCK OF AGES will be at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Arsht Center in downtown Miami, Florida October 9 to 14, 2012.
