BURN THE FLOOR brings ballroom dancing to South Florida!

Broadway has seen great dance from such stellar choreographers as Jerome Robbins, Agnes DeMille, Jack Cole, Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse and Tommy Tune, but until last year, there had never been an evening devoted to ballroom dance.

BURN THE FLOOR changed that, with a popular six-month run on Broadway that then spawned a national tour at prime venues around the United States.

"It was always a dream, that we wanted to perform in New York, amongst the best in the world," says producer Harley Medcalf. "That’s a great way to learn how good you are, can you compete." Appearing on Broadway was key to the steamy dance show’s marketability around the country.

"For me to say a year ago that I’m going to do a 40-week tour of America, it just wasn’t possible," concedes Medcalf. "But now that we do have that Broadway branding, it really makes such a difference."

BURN THE FLOOR, a wall-to-wall display of choreographic fireworks, features 20 athletic dancers from around the world.

Begun in 1999, the production preceded such television shows as ABC TV’s “Dancing with the Stars” and FOX TV’s “So You Think You Can Dance”, helping to kick-start the current dance boom.

Initially, Medcalf’s show seemed a little ahead of its time. "I was the crazy guy, as far as my contemporaries were concerned, trying to do something with ballroom," he says.

Thanks largely to the work of director-choreographer Jason Gilkison, BURN THE FLOOR redefined ballroom. "It’s not that traditional old stuffy dance that you see your grandparents doing," says Robin Windsor, an eight-year veteran of the show. "We’ve taken ballroom dancing to the next level. It’s really hip and sexy and very high energy. We kind of push the boundaries."

BURN THE FLOOR is dancing like you have never seen it before," says Australian-born company member Sharna Burgess, who has danced competitively for Germany. "It’s fast-paced, it’s intense, but at the right moments, it slows down and it becomes passionate and soft and intimate. It’s a feel-good show for everybody, whether you’re six or 60."

BURN THE FLOOR will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from November 16 thru 18, 2010.

Sweden’s Robyn heads to South Florida!

There's no question that 2010 is the year of Robyn. The hard-working Swedish pop vixen is in the midst of releasing three new albums called “Body Talk”, with “Body Talk Pt. 2” out as of this week. On top of that, she's somehow managed to maintain an endless touring schedule. After a run of dates earlier this summer, she's announced another world tour that will last until December 2010.

The lengthy trip kicks off with European festival dates that run through October 2010. Then, November sees Robyn return to North America with a busy schedule that includes Canadian stops in Toronto on November 12 and Vancouver on November 19.

That's not all, of course, as Robyn's “Body Talk Pt. 3” is also said to be due before the end of the year.

Robyn will be at The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, Florida on Friday November 5, 2010.

Social Distortion heads to South Florida with Lucero and Frank Turner!

Even though frontman Mike Ness is pushing 50, Social Distortion refuses to relent. This year alone has seen them spend time in the studio working on a new record for a new label (Epitaph), take a spin through South America (their first), recruited two new drummers (Atom Willard left), and tour the U.S. (Lollapalooza included). As if that weren't enough, the 2010 Social Distortion tour has now been extended into the fall.

The fall trek gets underway on October 14 in Salt Lake City with Lucero and Frank Turner also on the bill. The five-week itinerary covers the ground missed in the previous run as they travel through the Midwest, back up into the Northeast, down the Atlantic coast to Florida, and across the Southland. They'll wrap it up in Tempe on November 23.

The new record, “Pain, Death and Love's Lost Cause”, is expected to drop sometime between the two tour runs. It will be their first release since 2004's “Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll”.

Ness says of the new self-produced project, "It's funny... the record reminds me very much of 1992's “Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell”, but also I'm bringing elements of early New York '70s punk, influences that maybe haven't come out as prominently in my writing in the past. So, the record, to me, is almost like the Dead Boys meets the Black Crowes or something."

The album will be their first with Epitaph Records, but Ness is confident about the pairing: “We feel that Epitaph has a natural understanding of Social Distortion; both the history of the band and the direction we want to go. Combine that with their successful track record and it felt like a good next step for us. We’re looking forward to taking this step forward, opening some new doors with this upcoming album and this next chapter of Social Distortion.”

Although Ness is the only original member of the group, the iconic Southern California punk outfit has been around since 1979. Drummer Dave Hidalgo Jr. (of Suicidal Tendencies) was just announced as the newest member, replacing Scott Reeder (of Fu Manchu) who stepped in when Willard departed in March.

Social Distortion (with Lucero and Frank Turner) will be at The Fillmore at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, Florida on Saturday November 13, 2010.
